Constantine – No artificial turf at stadium

Constantine Public Schools Board of Education has opted not to install artificial turf at Sweetland Stadium, following discussion with residents opposed to the idea.

More than 40 people attended this week’s meeting to voice objections. Several people called for the resignation of school board president John Shuler.

In a recent edition of the school newspaper, Connections, Constantine Superintendent Steve Wilson announced the proposal to install artificial turf. Wilson wrote that with the possible addition of high school soccer, the district considered installing artificial turf to serve as both a football and soccer facility.

During this week’s board meeting, however, Wilson said in light of the public opposition, artificial turf is not happening and there would be no more discussion about the subject.

Sod was last installed at Sweetland Stadium in May 2013.
