Flooding damages culverts across the county

Members of the St. Joseph County Road Commission Board said 20 culverts have been damaged in the county this year due to flooding- related incidents.

During a board meeting earlier this month, director of operations Michael Harris said a dozen of the damaged culverts collectively are in Colon, Flowerfield and Leonidas townships.

In addition, two each are damaged in Fabius, Mendon and Mottville townships; one in Burr Oak Township; and one on its border with Colon Township.

Harris said repairs have so far cost $125,000 and he expects the figure to increase based on more-recent flooding.

Board member Eric Shafer said the detail is important to share with the county commission as it considers funding levels for bridges and crossings.
