White Pigeon firemen receive Hero’s Award

Four members of the White Pigeon Fire Department were honored over the weekend by the Michigan State Fireman’s Association at a banquet in Lapeer.

Receiving the Hero’s Award during the Saturday event were Chief Troy Andrews, Lt. Jeff Wagaman, Firefighter Thomas Law and Fire Cadet Merlin Zehr.

The four were honored for their life-saving skills that rescued a man who had fallen through the ice while fishing Jan. 27. Firefighters were called to an area pond where a 54-year-old man had fallen through the ice.

Rescue personnel were quickly on scene and the man was rescued. Andrews put on a water rescue suit while others maintained rescue ropes and the man was safely pulled from the water.
