A motion regarding medical marijuana facilities failed Wednesday on a tie vote by members of the Sturgis City Commission.
Language of the ordinance they were considering would have allowed provisioning centers in manufacturing and commercial zoning areas that were not within 1,000 feet of schools, churches, public parks or residential areas either inside or outside of the city.
A dozen audience members spoke regarding the topic. Some said they are opposed to having medical marijuana facilities in Sturgis, saying marijuana had caused harm to members of their immediate family and questioning if the facilities would make Sturgis a better place to raise children.
Others expressed support for the measure, saying medical marijuana had helped heal family members, that it would add jobs to the city and that the industry is highly regulated.
The matter could be placed on the agenda again at any time with a majority vote of commissioners.
