Man injured after fleeing police

A 28-year-old Grand Rapids man was seriously injured after leading police on a pursuit across St. Joseph County earlier this week.

According to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, the incident started at 11 p.m. Tuesday after deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on Michigan Avenue at Hutchinson Road in Park Township.

The driver, Nicholas Spoors, attempted to elude police and eventually crashed the vehicle he was driving on Colon Road, near Bennett Road, in Colon Township.

Investigators said it appears a portion of Spoors’ leg was amputated as a result of the collision. He was airlifted to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Deputies said alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department was aided by Michigan State Police and Colon Police.
