Mendon Riverfest deemed a success

The 31st year of the Mendon Riverfest community festival is in the books and organizers are declaring the three-day celebration a success.

Riverfest planning committee member Roger Cupp said attendance was strong, entertainment was solid and all other components of the festival appeared to be well received.

Cupp said in his opinion, the event-ending fireworks display Saturday night was the best he’s ever seen at Riverfest. He acknowledged Wolverine Fireworks and said the company did a top-notch job.

He said committee members will meet Aug. 28 and review all aspects of this year’s festival. Then, planning for No. 32 will start in February.

Winners of Saturday’s fishing tournament were 11-year-old Jackson Resh of Kalamazoo, who won the kids division; Mendon’s Steve Schabes took first in the catfish/carp division; and Kevin Bouw of Portage won the bass category.

Meanwhile, Brett Kline of Mendon and Steve Heath of Vicksburg won Friday’s cornhole tournament. A total of 42 teams participated.

Canoe swamp winners were Brad Cross, Bruno Bikulcius and Jon Urick, all of Mendon. Five teams took part in the event Saturday.

Other events included a canoe race, trivia contest and sidewalk chalk coloring competition.
