Phil York, 89

Phillip Gordon York, age 89, of Three Rivers passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Thurston Woods Village, Sturgis.

Phillip was born in Flint, Michigan, on September 4, 1928, the son of David and Ruth (Elliott) York. He moved with his family in 1930 to Three Rivers, where he remained a lifelong resident.

In October of 1957, Phillip was married to Jeanette Flint, who survives him.

After graduation from Three Rivers High School in 1946, Phillip moved to Chicago, where he continued his education at Armour Institute. Before his return to Three Rivers in 1951, he was employed by the Link-Belt Company in Chicago. In Three Rivers, Phil worked with his father, a local home builder. In 1961, he joined the U. S. Postal Service, faithfully delivering mail to Three Rivers patrons until his retirement in 1979.

Phil shared his father’s interest in stamp-collecting from boyhood. Photography, however, became his prime hobby. He was a gifted photographer and could often be seen on St. Joe County side roads, capturing scenes of local architecture and landscape. He also had a lifelong appreciation for music and the fine arts.

Phil was a faithful and dedicated Christian, from early childhood a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Three Rivers, where he shared his gifts in the church choir and in a variety of other ministries.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, David E. York.

Surviving to cherish Phillip’s memory are his wife, Jeanette York; daughters Evelyn (Jay) Eichorn and Cathy Bradford; a son, Gregory York; a sister, Mary (David) Recher; and two grandchildren, Ashley Bryan and Jacob Bradford.

He should be remembered by all who knew him as a quiet, caring and unselfish gentleman.

According to Phillip’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private interment was held at Riverside Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 15 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church. Envelopes are available at Hohner Funeral Home, in care of arrangements, and will be available as well as at St. John’s. Online condolences may be shared at www.hohnerfh.com.
