Branch County man arrested following knifing incident

Troopers from Michigan State Police are investigating a felonious assault by a 42-year-old man who used a hunting knife as a weapon.

Investigators were called at 11 p.m. Thursday to the 400 block of River Road in Branch County’s Batavia Township.

The suspect threatened to kill his mother. He also kept her from leaving the residence for several hours. The son took his mother’s cell phone to deny  her the ability to call 911, authorities said.

The mother was able to escape by convincing her son that she needed to go to the hospital. The son finally allowed to let his mother go to the hospital. He accompanied her to the hospital for treatment of a self-inflicted knife wound.

While at the hospital the mother contacted the police to report the assault.

The suspect was charged with felonious assault with a weapon, unlawful imprisonment and interfering with an electronic communication.
