County commission approves grants

Three grants were renewed for another year following approval last week by the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners.

The first was a state grant for $173,000 to Community Corrections for a variety of programs and administration-related expenses.

Next, commissioners OK’d an agreement making Emergency Management eligible for any number of grants in the 2019 fiscal year. The action is an annual requirement by the state of Michigan.

Finally, Emergency Management was approved to seek reimbursement of more than one-third of agency director TJ Baker’s salary and benefits. The reimbursed amount is approximately $28,500.

In an unrelated matter, commissioners approved a $5,600 allocation for a new copy/print/scan machine for the Department of Corrections/State Probation office. The current machine is a decade old and parts to repair it are becoming obsolete, according to county officials.

The new device will be purchased from Adams Remco of Elkhart.
