Woman rescued from apartment fire

Firefighters last week rescued a woman trapped on the second story of her apartment building after the structure caught fire in Constantine.

Around 10:30 a.m. Friday, central dispatch received several calls reporting the fire at Custer Apartments on Peachtree Street.

Firefighters arrived to find flames coming through the front door and rear of the building. Firefighters removed the woman from a second-floor bedroom window.

Authorities said the fire appears to have started in the living room of a first-floor apartment. Fire spread quickly to the hallway, then to second floor and eventually reaching the attic.

Seven families are homeless, as the building and its contents are considered a total loss.

One firefighter and two other people were treated at the scene, and one person was taken to Three Rivers Health for evaluation.

Officials said the blaze was extinguished after about five hours. Its cause remains under investigation.

Harvey House Hotel in Constantine is assisting with the collection of clothing for the fire victims.
