Out and About – Week of November 12th

My father reminded me more than once that if you don’t learn something new every day, you’ve missed out on a learning experience. I’m not sure if I accomplish this, but at least once a week, I learn a new word. The word this week is “Aphorism”. Aphorism is a statement of truth or opinion expressed in a concise and witty manner. Because I try to always include some wit in this column, here are six aphorisms:

It’s been said that 4,153,237 people were married last year. I’m pretty sure that that figure should be an even number.
Red, white and blue stand for freedom here in the USA. They don’t really stand for freedom if they are flashing behind you.
America is a country which produces citizens who will cross the ocean to fight for democracy but won’t cross the street to vote.
If you think nobody cares whether you’re alive, try missing a couple of payments.
Money can’t buy happiness, but it keeps the kids in touch.
You’re not really fat; you’re just easier to see.
Last Sunday was Veterans Day. It fell on Sunday this year which caused a bit of confusion. According to my calendar, it was observed on Monday, November 12. The American Legion Post here in Three Rivers held a brief service at the Legion this past Sunday at precisely 11 AM. The Honor Guard provided several ceremonies last Friday, November 9, they always do a special ceremony on November 11th. If you didn’t witness a ceremony for Veterans Day, I would hope that you paused for a moment or two to pay tribute to all veterans, whether they are gone or still with us.

With the holidays just around the corner, there will be times when some of us will be traveling to spend time with relatives. I’ve never cared for the idea of staying with relatives overnight. I’d rather find a hotel or motel nearby where I won’t feel that I’m infringing on someone’s privacy. There will still be plenty of time for visiting, and you’ll have your own area in which to really relax. You can go to bed when you want and sleep as late as you’d like. Most hotels have a complimentary breakfast, so you won’t be a burden when it comes to what you’d like for breakfast. Here are a few hints that might make that getaway a little easier on the pocketbook:

Don’t always use 800 numbers to reserve your room. Nationwide reservations services aren’t always aware of special deals at individual hotels.
Ask for a corporate room rate. They are usually twenty percent less than standard rates. It doesn’t hurt to ask. Have a business card with you. It just might be beneficial.
Ask for a better rate than what is offered. If the hotel/motel is not full, a lesser rate is better than no rate at all.
No good decision was ever made in a swivel chair.

Do more than is required of you.

I wonder if clouds ever look down on us and say, “Hey look. That one is shaped like an idiot”.

See you Out and About!
