Investigation begins into grocery store fire

Investigators are expected to determine this week the extent of damage fire caused to the former Village Market grocery store in Centreville.

Crews from six departments were dispatched late Friday to the 21,000-square-foot building at the east end of the village, where passers-by notified Central Dispatch of smoke coming from the building.

First-arriving personnel saw flames coming through the roof, requiring the services of ladder trucks from Three Rivers and Sturgis fire departments.

Fire crews were on the scene through the night to monitor for any potential flare-ups.

The store, part of four businesses in the strip plaza, closed in July 2011 and has been vacant since.
