Mendon solar-panel ordinance modified

A proposed ordinance related to solar-energy systems in Mendon Township was modified by its planning commission Tuesday.

The five-member panel agreed to change the distance of a setback from 125 to 50 feet in select areas where a solar-panel development is proposed.

The original distance was 125 feet all the way around the proposed White Pine Solar project, slated for a 200-acre area on the north side of Prairie Corners Road at Bucknell Road.

The origin of the change stems from concerns about whether it’s necessary to have such a large setback in areas where residences are not in place, according to zoning administrator Doug Kuhlman. He suggested keeping the 125-foot setback in place in the areas around the three existing residences but allow the 50-foot distance elsewhere.

With Tuesday’s amendment included, the proposed ordinance is now headed to the St. Joseph County Planning Commission for its review. From there, the proposed ordinance would return to the Mendon Township Planning Commission for final approval. It would then be passed on to Mendon Township Board of Trustees for its members to accept or reject.
