Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke said the department has fielded an extraordinary number of burglaries in the past month.
He advises the public to be especially vigilant in locking their homes and vehicles in order to prevent from being a theft victim.
From December 25 through January 15, 20 burglaries and 23 larcenies were reported to the agency. There was a noticeable spike in activity last week, Behnke said, and it is believed there are more incidents to be reported to law enforcement.
Most incidents are occurring in an area, but not limited to, Cassopolis and the Southeast region of the county.
Behnke said the pattern typically features suspects breaking into unlocked cars and garages to get property from vehicles and buildings. Suspects are also breaking into unoccupied homes to get items of value.
