Despite the reservations of a few dozen audience members, Mendon Township Planning Commission has recommended an ordinance related to a solar-panel development.
A few minor modifications were made during Tuesday’s meeting before the five-member panel voted to recommend the ordinance. The fate of the ordinance now rests in the hands of the Mendon Township Board.
If approved, the ordinance will likely open the door for Geronimo Energy to construct the proposed White Pine Solar project, slated for a 200-acre area on the north side of Prairie Corners Road at Bucknell Road.
Critics of the plan had plenty of feedback for the commission. Unfortunately for opponents, however, their opportunity to address commissioners came after the vote was taken.
That in itself became an issue, as several people used their board-allocated two minutes of comment time to criticize a process that does not allow for two-way dialogue and provides such a small amount of time to speak.
The next step for the now-recommended ordinance will be its initial appearance before the Mendon Township Board, which meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday next week.
