Planning commission endorses solar-panel project

A proposed solar-panel development in Mendon Township took another step forward Tuesday, when members of the St. Joseph County Planning Commission recommended in favor of the concept.

Though merely an advisory body, the 11-member planning commission fulfilled its role in the process. With the county’s endorsement, the proposal now heads back to the Mendon Township Planning Commission for what could very well be a final recommendation by its members.

Minnesota-based Geronimo is behind the proposed White Pine Solar project, slated for a 200-acre area on the north side of Prairie Corners Road at Bucknell Road. Geronimo hopes to develop a 20-megawatt project on the site.

Led by planning commission chairman Bob Horton, a Lockport Township resident, the commission took less than three minutes to review proposed amendments to Mendon Township’s zoning ordinance regarding the solar panels before its vote.

The Mendon Township Planning Commission is scheduled to meet Feb. 19, It is not yet clear, however, if the matter will be on its agenda this month or appear before the five-member panel March 19 instead.
