Sturgis Hospital officials said the hospital is in a desperate state, prompting Sturgis city commissioners this week to approve a resolution of support.
Commissioner Jon Good drafted an ordinance that acknowledges the Sturgis City Commission recognizes the importance of having a local hospital.
“Whereas the Sturgis Hospital has been and continues to make all efforts to provide compassionate care to the surrounding community … be it resolved the Sturgis city commission offers its full support to the board of directors, the physicians and the employees as they pursue a stronger and more prosperous future for Sturgis Hospital,” the ordinance states.
Hospital board member Joe Haas during Wednesday’s work session gave the commission an update on the process of first trying to work together with Three Rivers Health through the St. Joseph County Health Network, but then after a drastic decline in the hospital’s financial condition, realizing it had to seek out a partnership with a larger regional hospital.
Reaching out to each regional hospital within a four-hour radius of Sturgis, two were interested in talking further. The hospital board has been in discussions with them, Haas said.
