Child abuse charges for two Constantine residents

Two Constantine residents are in jail on charges related to child abuse.

Constantine police chief Mark Honeysett said officers were notified by doctors from Three Rivers Health that a 7-month-old girl was treated for skull fractures and bruising, signs of potential abuse, according to Honeysett.

The mother told hospital staff the baby had fallen off a couch at her Elm Tree Apartments residence and struck her head on the floor. Medical personnel, however, noted the injuries were not consistent with the manner in which the mother said the girl was injured.

Police later learned the 20-year-old mother became upset with the child and shook her in a violent manner. The child’s head struck a wall, as a result, authorities said, adding that the mother also allegedly slapped the baby in the face.

The baby’s 26-year-old father had knowledge of the abuse but did not report it to authorities, Honeysett said.

The woman was charged with first-degree child abuse and the father with fourth-degree child abuse.
