Commission approves new four-way stop

A busy intersection in Colon Township will soon become a four-way stop.

Members of the St. Joseph County Road Commission this week approved a plan to add stop signs on Colon Road at the Farrand Road intersection.

Commissioners agreed the measure was necessary in advance of bridge work on M-66, just north of the M-86 intersection that leads east into Colon.

Farrand and Colon roads will serve as the detour route during the project, which is expected to take about two months to complete.

While the resolution is valid for only 90 days, the road commission plans to keep renewing it to help residents get adjusted before planned construction of a roundabout at that intersection in 2020.

The majority of funding for the roundabout will come from a safety grant the road commission received last year.
