Mendon changes community service requirement

Members of the Mendon Community Schools Board of Education agreed last week to change to the amount of community-service hours required for graduation.

Currently, students are required to have four hours of community service to graduate.

These community service hours must be through an approved organization such as the school, local library, the village or township, a church, or any other worthwhile organization approved by an administrator.

The new policy will begin with next year’s freshman class.

Freshmen will need two hours of community service; sophomores will be required to obtain four hours of community service; juniors will need six hours of community service and seniors will have a 10-hour requirement. These are per-year requirements for a total of 22 hours.

Opportunities will be given each year for students to reach their goals by their class sponsor, and the district will actively seek out organizations that would qualify as an approved group for students.
