Sturgis considers possible truck route

Sturgis city commissioners will conduct a work session prior to their March 13 city commission meeting to discuss the possibility of a truck route around Sturgis.

Representatives from the St. Joseph County Road Commission, Sherman Township and St. Joseph County Commission have been invited to take part.

A bypass was considered about 10 years ago, but was not financially feasible for the city at that time.

County commissioner Ken Malone, who addressed city commissioners Feb. 27 to request the gathering of leaders, suggested that if there was equitable sharing, plans for a truck route perhaps could begin moving forward.

Discussion has been spurred by a grant the road commission received to widen Wait Road and better accommodate truck traffic that already travels on it. Residents have expressed concern that improvements will increase truck traffic and decrease safety and quality of life.
