County receives bids for accessible river launches

Two St. Joseph River locations are expected to soon feature ADA-accessible canoe and kayak launches.

St. Joseph County Administrator Teresa Doehring said she and parks and recreation director Jaymes MacDonald last week opened sealed bids for the projects.

Action on the bids was not necessary at the time by county commissioners.

If approved, the handicap-accessible developments would be at Reed River Park in downtown Mendon and another at Covered Bridge Farm County Park in Lockport Township.

Funding for the equipment is through a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant.

Doehring said three bids were received. They ranged from a high of $69,491 from Howell-based Waters Edge Dock and Hoist to the low bid of $60,710 from Donkersloot and Sons Marine Development Co. of New Buffalo.

The process will move forward and eventually appear before county commissioners for approval, according to Doehring.
