Jury selection begins in murder trial

Jury-selection begins today in St. Joseph County Circuit Court for the murder trial of Zachary Patten.

Patten is scheduled to stand trial for the July 2017 murder of Shane Richardson.

According to authorities, Patten drove to a home in the 16000 block of Featherstone Road in Florence Township, where his ex-wife resided.

Police said Richardson, along with his pregnant wife and two children, were watching television around 10 p.m., when Patten knocked on the door and he was told to leave.

According to authorities, Patten broke a window in the door and forced his way into the home, confronting Richardson. Police said Patten shot Richardson at point-blank range, in view of the children. Richardson died a short time later at Three Rivers Health.

Patten is currently at Bellamy Creek Correctional Faculty in Ionia.
