Local student wins art competition

A Centreville High School student was named the winner of this year’s Congressional Art Competition for Michigan’s Sixth Congressional District.

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton announced this week that Makala Carr, a junior, is the recipient of this year’s award.

Carr’s art, featuring the use of a colored pencil, charcoal and ink pen, is titled “Opinion Orange” and will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Kalamazoo Institute of Arts sponsored the 2019 high school area show, which has hosted the Congressional Art Competition for six years.

As the winner, Carr and a guest will be invited to participate this summer in a recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C., for all of the Congressional Art Competition winners. Carr said she is thrilled that her Centreville High School art teacher, Ashely Rolfe, has accepted the offer to join her in Washington for the ceremony.
