First river cleanup complete

The first river cleanup of 2019 featured no major surprises, as about 60 pounds of debris was collected Saturday.

Shaun Grace, director of the river cleanup program, said the first of six cleanups this summer took place over a 3.1-mile stretch of the Prairie River, from Findlay Road in Nottawa Township to Lake Templene. It attracted 11 volunteers.

Grace said the collection featured the usual number of cans and bottles, though volunteers did recover a kids’ swing set.

The cleanup program, now in its ninth season, is sponsored by the St. Joseph County Conservation District and will continue every other Saturday through mid-August.

On June 15, volunteers will meet at Dickinson Road in White Pigeon Township and cover more than three miles of the Fawn River to Haybridge Road in Florence Township.
