Man shot following dispute

A 37-year-old Cass County man was shot last week following a dispute in the community of Vandalia.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called at 10 p.m. Friday to the 62000 block of Cass Avenue in response to a report of a man shot in the abdomen.

First aid was immediately administered to Vandalia resident James Hodges Jr. He was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition, according to authorities.

Deputies learned that Hodges was shot by his 15-year-old son, whose name is being withheld due to his juvenile status. The boy reportedly fired the shot in self defense and defense of another. No charges are being sought against the boy.
