Two dead, several serious injuries in crash involving buggy

Two children, ages 6 and 2, were killed and five other family members injured when the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado struck the horse-led buggy in which they were passengers just after 6 p.m. Friday in Branch County’s Algansee Township.

The horse was also killed in the accident.

Investigators said the pickup was southbound on Kelly Road, between the Hillsdale and Branch County line, when it struck the back of the buggy. It, too, was headed south.

According to responding officers, the two children were killed instantly while the mother and father, along with their three other children were lying across the roadway.

Survivors were transported via helicopter to Fort Wayne for medical treatment.

Authorities said the driver of the pickup was taken into custody but did not elaborate on the circumstances.

Names of the injured and the pickup driver have not been released.
