A 17-year-old Mendon teenager received serious injuries Thursday when a motorbike he was driving was struck from behind by an SUV in Park Township.

St. Joseph County sheriff ’s deputies said the incident occurred on Michigan Avenue near Parkville Road. Both the vehicle and motorbike were eastbound on Michigan Avenue when the crash occurred. Following the collision, bystanders performed CPR on the bike-rider until rescue personnel arrived.

The driver of the SUV, who fled the scene, was identified as a 24-year-old Three Rivers man.

Witnesses told central dispatch the driver had left the scene. They also provided a description of his vehicle. While deputies were on the way to the crash site, they spotted the vehicle – a black Jeep – on Moorepark Road.

The suspect fled from deputies but soon gave up and was arrested. He faces felony charges.
