Motorcycle crash in St. Joseph County

A motorcyclist was forced to lay down his bike in order to avoid rear-ending a car in stopped traffic.

According to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, 55-year-old Philip Velie was driving east on U.S. 12 when he laid down his motorcycle due to backed-up traffic at Klinger Lake Road.

Velie ended up pushing his bike into the oncoming lane of traffic. The cycle was run over by a vehicle driven by 60-year-old Michael Wilson. The SUV Wilson was driving left the roadway and struck a tree, deputies said.

Both Velie and Wilson were treated at the scene, authorities said.
