Saturday’s “Homes For Our Troops” event, a fundraiser staged annually by Park Township residents Jim and Peggy Fassett, set a single-year record for amount of money raised.
Jim Fassett said last year’s record of more than $19,000 was easily surpassed and as of late Sunday, the collection for the 2019 fundraiser was more than $22,500. Additional pledges are expected throughout the week.
Over the course of its first 10 years, the Fassett-backed fundraiser has generated $94,000. Saturday’s amount brings their 11-year total to almost $120,000.
A soldier from Wisconsin, his wife and their two children will be the recipients of this year’s Fassett gathering. Marine Lance Corporal Bobby McCardle, an Infantryman from Franklin, Wis., was in a vehicle destroyed by an improvised explosive device in April 2007 in Iraq. The result was the loss of his right leg, internal injuries and a traumatic brain injury.
Homes For Our Troops, which has partnerships with a number of companies and laborers who donate their product and time, helps fund construction of barrier-free homes for soldiers whose injuries require several modifications inside their residences.
