Members of the Sturgis Planning Commission last month approved a special land use for Prism Power Partners to open a solar energy facility near the intersection of South Centerville and Bogen roads.
The company intends to perform site preparation by the end of 2019 and be operational in September 2020.
According to officials, the “Electric City” solar facility would generate 15 megawatts of power across an 88-acre field, produce electricity equivalent to 3,475 homes, generate about 170 construction jobs and generate $240,000 in first year property tax benefit, including $84,000 directly to the city of Sturgis.
The city already has approved a 25-year power purchase agreement with Prism.
