Woman dies in Cass County lake

A Shipshewana woman died Tuesday in a swimming accident in Cass County’s Porter Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called at 7:30 p.m. to a location at Long Lake, where a group of seven people from Indiana were wakeboarding. The group stopped for a break when one of the participants, 19-year-old Janelle Miller, left the boat to swim.

Shortly after she was in the water, passengers were unable to locate Miller. They called 911 and dove into the water in an attempt to locate Miller.

Cass County Marine Division, along with the Van Buren County Dive Team, arrived on the scene and located Miller’s body just before 11 p.m.

Alcohol was not a factor and a life jacket was not used, authorities said.
