Out and About – Week of September 30th

I don’t know how I would get along if I didn’t have a planner. A lot of people keep a planner in their phones and I’m sure it works quite well for them, as long as they remember to check it regularly. Some have calendars hanging in their kitchen. The biggest problem with planners and calendars is that you must check them regularly and keep them current. My phone reminds me of important appointments. This has saved me more than once.

To don’t find many phone books around anymore. If you do come across one, it usually contains just business numbers. Many folks have gotten rid of their land-lines and just use their cell phones. The same can be said of address books. Address books are kept in one’s computer now.

Should you be one who still uses a regular address book, here are a few suggestions that might help you keep it in order:

Write the names in ink and the addresses and phone numbers in pencil. You’ll have fewer cross outs, because all you need to do is erase the pencil entries. A person’s address and phone number will change more often than their name.
A good idea would be to make a copy of the address book and keep that copy in a safe place, in case the book gets lost.
You might want to list often-used addresses on the first page. It will save time when it’s important to need that information at a moment’s notice.
If you’re applying for a job, you’ll want to take the address book with you. It will come in handy should you need to list personal references.
Do things for people, not because of who they are or what they do in return, but because of who you are.

Now that we are into the fall season, visiting local orchards and acquiring fresh fruit is on everyone’s mind. Nothing says autumn like biting into a fresh apple, or enjoying a nice glass of apple cider. Hot apple cider also makes the taste buds come alive.

My mother did a lot of canning of both fruit and vegetables. A practice that is not that popular these days. Cooked fruits are especially good for delicate digestion and appetites. Raw fruits are intended for those who can get all the benefit from them. Those who are stronger should eat raw fruit. Should you decide to cook fruit, please note that fruit should be simmered, not boiled.

With holidays just around the corner, there will be a need for pumpkin pies. If you are planning to make pumpkin pies for your holiday dinners and would like to economize in the use of eggs, just add one-half teaspoonful of baking powder to your ingredients and one egg will be sufficient for at least three or four pies.
