The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported Tuesday an increase in cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Southwest Michigan.
EEE is a rare virus transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. As of Wednesday, there have been no confirmed human cases of EEE in St. Joseph, Branch, or Hillsdale counties. There have, however, been three confirmed horse cases of the disease in St. Joseph county and all 3 of the animals died.
In Southwest Michigan there have been seven human cases of EEE confirmed and three of the people have died.
In response to the recommendation from the State Health Department, Centreville’s JV football game against White Pigeon will begin tonight at 5 p.m. in Centreville. Its varsity football game against White Pigeon will begin at 5 p.m. Friday in White Pigeon. Mendon at Bloomingdale and Three Rivers at Sturgis will also start their varsity games at 5 p.m. Friday.
Other schools may be changing their start times, as well.
