Sturgis Hospital in negotiations with Ascension Borgess

Sturgis Hospital has been working with Ascension Borgess to take over Sturgis Medical Group.

Hospital officials said last week they hope to have an agreement finalized as quickly as possible, hospital board vice president Joe Haas told Sturgis city commissioners at their meeting Wednesday.

Ascension Borgess would rent Medical Commons 1 and some of Medical Commons 2, and purchase the equipment. That includes the women’s clinic, PM Care, pediatrics, orthopedics and all the hospital’s individual clinics.

The agreement would not include the hospital itself: emergency room, nurses, lab technicians, administration and inpatient/outpatient care.

Haas said the partnership would put the hospital in a better position. The board will continue to pursue other partnerships to ensure the hospital remains viable.

He said the hospital still has a dire financial situation and encouraged local residents to patronize Sturgis Hospital if they want to keep it in the community.
