Today is Election Day. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you are aware of the many items on the ballot. Everything from a millage to electing a city commissioner. If you want change, this is your time to perhaps make a difference. The hours for voting are from 7 AM until 8 PM. If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain.
The Stone House FREE Store, located at the corner of Bennett and West Streets, directly behind the First Presbyterian Church, is in need of cookware, kitchen utensils, pots and pans, and women’s shoes. The FREE Store is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 AM until 1 PM. They request that you drop off any donations only during their normal store hours.

I’ve listed quotes from Randy Pausch in a couple of past columns. He makes a lot of sense, and I try to encourage myself to heed more of his advice. Here are five more of his quotes:
“If you dispense your own wisdom, others often dismiss it; if you offer wisdom from a third party, it seems less arrogant and more acceptable.”
“Automobiles are there to get you from point A to point B. They are utilitarian devices, not expressions of social status.”
“No matter how bad things are, you can always make things worse. At the same time, it is often within your power to make them better.”
“Time must be explicitly managed, like money.”
“Time is all you have. And you may find one day that you have less than you think.”
A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it.
To many, the major travel season is over. There are, however, some folks who enjoy traveling during the fall. As a matter of fact, we have friends who just returned from a vacation in Europe. They are able to do this because they are both retired and have decided to travel now when most people are returning to the workplace. If you are retired and over the age of fifty, here are some tips to consider should you travel internationally. I’ll list four more tips next week:
Don’t trust over-the-counter drugs purchased overseas. You never know what you’re going to get. Try to always carry some basic OTC drugs purchased here with you when you travel.
If traveling to a sunny locale, ask your doctor if any of your prescribed medicines cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Eat bananas, tomatoes and oranges when you can to avoid dehydration. They are rich in electrolytes.
Take more prescription medicine than you think you’ll need. A week’s worth might be good. Don’t forget to put your medicine in your carry-on luggage. You might also want to have your doctor provide you with an extra prescription in case your pills are lost or stolen.
Ask friends who recently visited your destination. Find out what they wished they had taken with them.
As with any travel that might involve being away from home for more than a couple of days, it’s not a good idea to broadcast your plans over the internet. Mr. Burglar loves to know when you’re not at home. Save the pictures and share them once you’ve returned.
Spirits of camphor rubbed over a mirror will brighten it.
See you Out and About!
