Out and About – Week of December 30th

“Breakfast”. Probably one of my favorite words. I can’t remember ever starting a day without having at least something to eat. There are many who just have a cup of coffee and they’re ready to go. Usually one cup of coffee is good enough for me. I know a few people who consume a whole pot of “Go Juice” before they leave home. I usually have my one cup several hours into the day and I’m fine with that.

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, because you have been fasting for around eight hours and it’s time to break the fast. I’ve always wondered who “they” were and why do we usually heed their advice. That’s another column, for sure.

I prefer to have breakfast out, because that way no one has to go to the bother of preparing the meal for me and cleaning up after, unless that is part of their job. There are several eateries here in St. Joe County to choose from, when it comes to dining out. Everyone has their favorite. It’s fun to join friends over a cup of coffee and whatever suits your fancy when it comes to a breakfast entree. By having breakfast with friends, a multitude of problems can be solved. A few weeks ago, we were discussing Red China. My contribution to the conversation was that I thought a white or blue tablecloth would look best. It’s too bad they don’t serve more breakfasts during the sessions at the United Nations. Senate and Congressional meetings might be handled better if a breakfast was served. The only problem that might come up would be what committee should pick up the check.

This Saturday, January 4, is a special day for those who are serious when it comes to recycling. The Recycling Department at the Three Rivers Landfill will be conducting a special collection for styrofoam. From 7:30 AM until 11:30 AM, they will receive styrofoam. You may take this to the normal drop-off point on Roberts Road, located on the east side of the landfill. What a great way to start off the new year.

There are still some folks who make New Year’s Resolutions. If you are one of them, here are five things you might want to add to your list of resolutions:

If you don’t already have one, get yourself a dog. You can learn a lot about unconditional love.
Remember other people’s birthdays.
Sing in the shower more often.
Use the good silver for something other than a special occasion.
Plant flowers this spring.
Here’s another one of those questions that might keep you awake at night. “Why does moss grow on the north side of trees?” It’s a fact that moss does have a tendency to grow on the north side of a tree. The sun is responsible for this occurrence. In the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, the sun rises in the southeast and sets in the southwest during the winter. In summer, it rises in the northeast and sets in the northwest. Objects that face south, therefore, receive more sunlight throughout the year than those facing north, a fact which is readily evident on the mountain slopes as well as on trees. North-facing mountain slopes tend to be moister and cooler than the sunnier south-facing slopes. For this reason, in many areas like the Far West, the vegetation is much lusher and greener on northern slopes. Moss likes the cool, moist conditions that exist on the northern side of trees and often will grow more abundantly there. However, this is not a totally reliable way to navigate through the woods. You might be advised to pack a compass.

This is my last column until next year. I wish you all a very healthy and prosperous New Year.

See you Out and About!
