Shop With a Hero event helps children shop

The annual Shop With a Hero event was held last weekend in Sturgis.

Twenty-seven students from Wall, Congress, Wenzel and Eastwood schools were selected by Sturgis Public School staff to participate in the event. The participants went shopping at Walmart with local heroes from the community.

Each student received $ 90 to spend on presents, according to Sam Watson, Sturgis Pubic School resources officer. Watson said he couldn’t thank everyone enough for the support.

Heroes and students were paired up and store workers also helped. Heroes who took part in the event came from Michigan State Police, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, Constantine Police, Colon Police, Sturgis Police, Sturgis Fire, Tri-Township Fire and local service members with the United States Army.

The Walmart Foundation, along with Sturgis Walmart, donated all the money for the event.
