Police investigate attempted fraud

Michigan State Police troopers were called last week to investigate an attempted fraud involving a senior citizen in Branch County.

An elderly person was contacted by an individual she believed to be her grandson, who stated he was in court for an at-fault crash and needed $15,000 in order to be released.

The victim went to her bank, withdrew the money, put it in a box and sent it by FedEx to a destination address given to her by the perpetrators.

Later that evening, the elderly victim started to have second thoughts and called state police. After listening to the victim’s story, the investigating trooper took immediate action by contacting FedEx authorities, who assisted in diverting the package from delivery.

The police agency in the receiving town was contacted by the trooper and the package was safely intercepted to be returned to the victim.
