Record numbers for “Free Ride Home”

The 12th New Year’s Eve “Free Ride Home” broke a ridership record this week.

Susan Vosmik, executive director of the Three Rivers-based St. Joseph County Transportation Authority, said 65 people took advantage of the free, no-questions-asked option.

The number far eclipsed the previous high-water mark of 37. That record was set in the program’s inaugural year, on the eve of 2009.

With a bus on standby in Three Rivers and another positioned in Sturgis, Free Ride Home provided a ride from and to any point in St. Joseph County. The service started at 6 p.m. Tuesday and concluded at 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Vosmik said 54 passengers took the Three Rivers bus while the Sturgis-based vehicle transported 11 riders.
