Conservation District plans 10th cleanup season

The St. Joseph County Conservation District’s river cleanup will reach a milestone this summer.

May 30 will begin the 10th season of the cleanup program. It also marks the first of five cleanups the Centreville-based agency will oversee this summer.

Shaun Grace, a conservation district employee whose work includes coordinating and executing the river cleanups, said the dates for 2020 cleanups have been set. Grace said the dates are: May 30, June 13, June 27, July 11 and July 25. More details, once available, will be posted on the agency’s website.

The agency’s annual effort received a setback during the offseason, as grants through the state funding that supports programs such as the St. Joseph County river cleanup were not available this year.

Grace said TH Plastics of Mendon stepped up and made a $2,000 donation, which will help the agency lead the five cleanups this summer.

He noted that the cleanups this summer will focus on the Pigeon River and the Prairie River.
