January’s unemployment rate in St. Joseph County was one-tenth of a percent higher than the previous month.
The monthly labor-market analysis by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget showed the county’s 3.3 percent unemployment rate in January was down from December’s 3.4 percent.
St. Joseph County was slightly below the state’s unemployment average, which was 3.5 percent in December.
Despite across-the-board layoffs in the construction, and leisure and hospitality sector, St. Joseph County was the only county in the region to experience a jobless rate decrease for the month.
Kalamazoo County featured the lowest unemployment rate in the region in December, at 2.7 percent. Meanwhile, at 4.2 percent, Van Buren County had the highest unemployment rate in the region for December.
Cass County’s unemployment rate for the month was 3.6 percent.
