A few hundred well-wishers showed up at separate events Friday to recognize Brad Balk on his retirement as St. Joseph County sheriff.
The first of two ceremonies took place at Glen Oaks Community College, where State Rep. Aaron Miller, State Sen. Kim LaSata and other dignitaries presented Balk with proclamations and other mementos honoring his 11-year tenure as sheriff and more than two decades with the sheriff’s department.
A second event was at the St. Joseph County FOP lodge, east of Centreville. There, Balk was again recognized by family and friends offering their best wishes.
His nephew, Mark Lillywhite, will complete the 11-month term still remaining from Balk’s 2016 election to the post. Lillywhite, a 44-year-old Three Rivers resident, has filed paperwork and is a candidate for the August primary.
