A pillar in St. Joseph County’s education circles has announced his plans to retire at the end of the school year.
Terry Conklin, superintendent the past 26 years at Burr Oak Community Schools, earlier this week said he will step down at the end of May as head of the county’s smallest K-12 school district.
The 72-year-old Conklin retired 10 years ago but stayed on as superintendent in an arrangement in which he was contracted but not as a district employee and worked under a state-imposed salary cap.
Conklin said he plans to stay retired this time, adding that he simply but reluctantly needs to move on to the next phase of his life.
