County pursues grant for park improvements

Members of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners appear poised to go after a state grant that, if secured, would benefit one of its county parks.

During Wednesday’s executive committee meeting, conducted through Zoom remote-conferencing platform, commissioners agreed to forward the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant application to their board meeting Tuesday next week for a public hearing.

County grant writer James Hissong said the potential funds would help with development of a pavilion as well as renovation of a restroom at Rawson’s King Mill County Park in Leonidas Township.

If awarded, the $50,000 grant would require a county match of $16,700. Hisssong said the renovated restroom would feature “Green Flush” environmental technology and replace a pit toilet developed in the early 1990s.
