Glen Oaks will award emergency grants

Glen Oaks Community College plans to award nearly $300,000 in emergency grants to assist eligible students whose lives and education have been disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak.

The funding is part of the overall $6 billion package from the U.S. Department of Education through the Higher Education Emergency Relief fund, and authorized by the Coronavirus Aid Relief, and Economic Security Act in early April.

Tonya Howden, vice-president of student services, said many students are struggling to meet basic needs, such as housing and food as they or family members may now be unemployed.

Others lack access to computers or the internet and Glen Oaks is encouraging students to use these funds to help them meet their needs, Howden said.

Students must meet a number of criteria in order to be eligible for these grants; high school students are not eligible. Students who were enrolled in face-to-face classes for the winter 2020 semester should visit: glenoaks.edu/ coronavirus for detailed requirements.
