Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has delayed the expiration of Michigan driver’s licenses and state ID cards until late July amid the lingering coronavirus pandemic.
An executive order Whitmer signed Friday extends until July 31 the expiration date of state ID cards, valid driver’s licenses and operator endorsements that expired or were set to expire between Feb. 1 and June 30.
A previous order the governor signed on April 13 had extended until June 30 the expiration of those documents that expired or were set to expire between Feb. 1 and May 31.
The new order’s protections do not apply to motorists with suspended or revoked driver’s licenses.
Friday’s order also suspends penalties for vehicle registration violations and ensures that automobile insurance will continue to cover Michigan drivers.
Whitmer said in a statement that during the global pandemic “nobody should have to stress about renewing their drivers license or state ID card, or worry about their auto insurance coverage.”
“By extending this executive order, we’re lifting that burden off Michiganders’ shoulders so they can focus on staying home and staying safe,” she said.
