Investigation continues in arrest of prosecutor

Authorities are continuing their investigation into Monday’s arrest of St. Joseph County prosecuting attorney John McDonough, who was taken into custody Monday evening for driving while intoxicated.

McDonough, 40, was the only person involved in the single-vehicle crash, which occurred around 7 p.m. in the 17000 block of Lovers Lane in Lockport Township, less than two miles from his residence. McDonough’s vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a property owner’s fence, authorities said.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite confirmed the crash and arrest Monday. Lillywhite said there were no injuries.

McDonough was also cited for having open intoxicants in the vehicle. Following his arrest, McDonough was taken to Cass County Jail.

An arraignment is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. May 21.

McDonough was 28 years old when he was elected prosecutor in 2008, upsetting longtime incumbent Doug Fisher.
