Business celebrates 100 years in business

A White Pigeon business is preparing to celebrate a milestone few others in St. Joseph County have been around long enough to experience.

The Tasty Nut Shop is a century old this year and owner Marjorie Hamminga said a celebratory open house is schedule 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. She said door prizes, refreshments and fanfare will be a part of the occasion.

The 85-year-old Hamminga has overseen the corner business, which boasts “the largest assortment of toasted nuts in the United States,” since 1986. She said mail-order and internet business have helped keep the Tasty Nut Shop open in its later years.

Hamminga, who is the seventh owner in the store’s hundred-year history, said its most-popular item is a toss-up between cashews and pecans.
