Sturgis home destroyed by fire

Fire destroyed a vacant home last week in Sturgis, and two other fires in the city occurred over the weekend.

The Sturgis Fire Department was dispatched just before 11 p.m. Friday to 223 Susan St., and arrived at the scene to find the home fully engulfed. The structure quickly began to collapse.

Firefighters were able to stop flames from spreading to neighboring homes, said Deputy Chief Ryan Banaszak. Two nearby homes, however, sustained damage to their exterior siding.

Banaszak said the home was vacant and appeared to be under construction.

On Saturday, director of public safety Geoff Smith helped a family exit a burning home at 209 Maple St. A neighbor provided a ladder for Smith, as the fire was on the second floor of the multi-residence structure.

Two adults and a baby were helped to safety.

In all, residents of five apartments were displaced due to fire, smoke and water damage.

Late Sunday, a fire was reported on North Orange Street. Firefighters arrived to find a fireworks-related incident that caused damage to a garage.
